A PHOTOGRAPH
This is 1980's Manhattan.
The skyline stands boldly as it once was.
It's form is stretched by exposure.
The view is both abstract and familiar.
Both disordered and precise, blurred yet sharply remembered, the image settles as the gaze eases back.
The skyline resolves.
The towers emerge through motion and scattered light projecting toward infamy.
SKYLINE 87'

I made this photograph in 1987, on 35mm black and white negative film, using a long exposure zoom technique, entirely in camera. I was a high school intern working for a photographer who had just introduced me to the technique. I experimented with it on the New York skyline and something unexpected emerged.
As the twenty-fifth anniversary of September 11 approaches, the time feels right to share it more widely.
